…Says CBN/ GSM Operators Have Roles to Play
By Shola Akingboye – April 15, 2019
A curative appeal has been made to President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) from the paucity of fund bedeviling the Service in which many Nigerians have castigated the NIS for ineffectiveness and lackadaisical attitudes at the border posts, particularly as available reports reveals that foreign armed bandits have invaded the Northern parts of the country kidnapping, killing and maiming innocent Nigerians.
In a Press Statement made available to newsmen in Abuja as obtained by RegentAfrica Times, the Deputy National Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO), Amb. Hussaini Coomasie, who is also the Executive Secretary- Association for Good Governance Network, has expressed his disappointment over the incessant killings in the Northern parts of the country citing inadequate funding of the Nigerian Immigration Service in taming the scourge of foreigners linked to kidnappings and killings in the region.
Coomasie, a politician and social crusader calls on President Buhari and other concern stakeholders to urgently look the way of the NIS in providing necessary funding and adequate operational tools as parts of the President’s Next Level measures required to eradicate armed banditry in Zamfara and along Kaduna axis in particular.
“We are beaming our searchlights on the Nigerian Immigration Services over the insecurity situation in the country. Investigations reveals there are external collaborators in the resurgence banditry in our land; and we shall mobilize our 63 journalists (special members) of our forums, to take this matter to the next level, to the hearing of all stakeholders including Mr. President, that the Nigerian Immigration Service is in dearth need of adequate funding that will enhance protections and the control of the Nigerian international borders.”
“It has become a known fact that the Immigration Service has suffered paucity of funds over the years, and this
led to inadequate operational tools such as Patrol Vehicles, staff uniforms and other kits.”
“There is no surveillance equipment and above all no enough funds to offset officers special allowances. How would you expect the Service to function optimally? This is impossible! “
“The direct implication of this is manifested in the criminal activities along our porous borders, and most of the
criminals terrorizing some parts of Northern Nigeria are foreigners who found their way into the country due to permissive situation along the Nigerian border post.” The statement reads.
It would be recalled, Amb. Coomasie who is also a member of Global Movement for Social Justice has earlier lent his expertise on security matters on how the scourge of kidnapping can be curtail in the country.
While queried the difficulties in nipping the menace of kidnappers in the bud, Coomasie however commended the efforts of the Federal Government and the security men on the operations Puff-Adder of the Nigerian Police and the Sharan Daji of the military as a welcome development, which he said came at the right time.
He therefore call on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the apex bank also has roles to play on possible solution and emergency intervention that could help put an end to kidnappings in all parts of the country:
“What is so difficult in stopping this kidnapping?”
“Kidnappers carry out their crimes for cash. So let the CBN restrict cash withdrawals to N50, 000 in all Nigerian banks.”
“Undoubtedly that will affect rural markets and those that carry out cash transactions, but with time they will get used to the system and adjust to it.
“Without cash, Kidnapping will die a natural death the way home robberies for cash died”
“Let them keep abducting. They will stop the moment liquid cash is no longer available to drop for ransom payments”
“Government should also criminalize ransom payment as applicable globally and among the civilized nations. In UK and USA, paying ransom is a crime. Families of kidnap victims should report to police and allow them do their job” He stated.
Coomasie also called for stringent penalties for any unregistered SIM cards in the country:
“All unregistered SIM should be blocked. Go to any serious country and you will know that to own a SIM is not possible without proper registration with genuine documents. Without the use of GSM, kidnappers have no means of contacting families of victims for negotiations.”
“Kidnappings in Abuja-Kaduna highway take place between Katari-Rijana and Jere Axis, all within Kaduna state. Let the government takes over the forests and set up its security camps in the porous bush.”
“The bushes should be cleared withing the range of 500 meters from the main road and lease-out as commercial farming among the locals”
“Let those in authority implement these measures and let see if there will be kidnapping in Nigeria.”
“As for the operations Puff-Adder of the NPF and Sharan Daji by the military, these are welcome idea and are coming at the right time.” Long Live PMB, Long Live FRN.” He stressed
